I've seen John Mayer and I get it, but he way overplays for my taste. He's written a couple of good songs, but he's not a career artist in my book. He's trendy and dates hot girls and is definitely more of a celebrity than an artist.

So why kind of scouting do you do? Are there certain genres you target more than others?

Well, he stopped listening to me after the Drive By Truckers got him fired from Sony...

I started off as a rock guy, but ventured into hiphop and R&B (signed the Black Eyed Peas and John Legend in a publishing gig) and latin/reggaeton (worked with an artist named Voltio). I like all kinds of music as long as its good. I know that sounds trite, but it is true. Wes was there when I became obsessed with the Drive by Truckers and I turned him on to Das Racists, the hiphop group he mentioned earlier. I had a really long run by being open to all kinds of music and not just one particular genre.

Know any solid electronic groups out there? Seems as though I've listened to every big name out there.

It seems electronic music is one of the biggest genres out there right now lead by DeadMaus. He headlined Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas in front of 100,000. David Guetta, Swedish House Mafias & Kaskade are really big. I'm not huge fan of these groups, although I like a couple of David Guetta songs. Dubstep seems to be the latest rage, Chase & Status, Rusko & Benga are a couple of groups to check. I also like the instrumental rock scene i.e. Explosions in the Sky. Check out American Dollar and Arms & Sleepers

Skream & Benga put on a great show at the HARD Fest here in NYC summer 2010, but I was really there for Sleigh Bells, whom Al had turned me onto the year before.

Seen/heard of most of those guys. Deadmau5 is from my home town so he comes around a fair amount. Still haven't seen Guetta unfortunately but I'm seeing Avicii and Steve Aoki on New Years this year. Haven't heard of American Dollar though so I will check them out.

Man I friggin love Explosions in the Sky. As far as electronic goes, guaranteed you know him, but Skrillex is mind numbing. Way better than Deadmau5 in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of attending undergrad/grad school at Wesleyan while MGMT and later Das Racist were there. So glad for their success. I love rjd2 and ratatat for electronic/sample based music. I also think the roots from 1994-2002 are awesome for live/instrument based-hip hop. If you like hip-hop in general: Binary Star, Jedi Mind Tricks, Non Phixion, Talib Kweli, Paharoahe Monch, Tribe called quest, pharcyde, ghostface, geminini, dizzy rascal, slick rick, army of the pharaohs.

Seriously, though, if you're into hip-hop, Immortal Technique has been on constant blast for me for the past year and a half. Smart, sharp, politically-leaning, tight flow.
