Sorry for starting a thread just on Pujols but I think it is kind of a big deal. What do you guys think about him signing with LA just for the money? I was sure he would come back with the Cardinals because I thought he was one of the few good guys left but I guess not. What do you guys think?

Good guy or not, $50 million is $50 million. The amount of criticism he will get for that is unfathomable, yet those criticizing would not be able to turn down $50 million, I guarantee it.

The way I see it is that he is going to get $200 million no matter who he chooses. He has a ton more than he needs already. Whatever you want to say about it, the deciding factor was money, and its sucks how baseball is like that. Proud to be a Braves fan and I love Chipper and B-Mac even more now. Feel bad for the Cardinals fans.

Why would anyone turn down $50 million? It might be the conservative in me but turning down $50 million to stay in St. Louis over California would be the craziest thing I've ever heard.

It's interesting that he chose the Angels and more money, as California state income tax is almost double that of Missouri. Though I'm sure he has some pretty impenetrable tax shelters in place.
And don't be naive, Pujols is NOT one of the good guys. He's an evangelical Christian who's actually kind of a dick. And his agent, Dan Lozano, is the sleaziest of an incredibly sleazy group of people.

Not sure how religion matters.

Him being an evangelical Christian is sort of the root for a lot of his asshole behavior. Going to Glenn Beck rallies, putting the only classical radio station in St. Louis out of business so it could be converted to an evangelical station, that sort of thing. He does quite a bit of charity work, and is, by most accounts, generally a nice guy, but he's driven by, IMHO, a rather screwed-up belief system, which only seems to apply when it doesn't get in the way of what he wants (lying about his age, turning a blind eye to the unscrupulous actions of his agent, etc.).

Not sure I follow. Because someone makes a religious radio station, he is an ass hole? It's cool to not like a guy because he truly is a douche, but this just seems like a disagreement with his personal beliefs.

Let's just say all Evangelicals are assholes and leave it at that. Anyone who doesn't support equal rights for all citizens is an asshole. And that's as far into it as I care to get here.

So basically: "Anyone who doesn't agree with my beliefs in an asshole." Interesting stuff.

That's actually completely not what I said. I said, "Anyone who doesn't support equal rights for all citizens is an asshole." And I stand by that.
I know plenty of religious people (Christian, Jew, Muslim, whatever), whose (religious) beliefs I do not share, who actively support civil rights for all, a woman's right to choose, . Evangelicals do not fall into this category.
I'm not trying to denigrate religious people or religion in general, only a certain bigoted and proselytizing sect that seeks to make their religion into law. Religious fundamentalism is bad in all forms.

Fine, whatever, I don't feel like arguing the finer points of the semantics here. If you don't believe in equal rights for everyone - gay, straight, black, white, green, man, woman, other, and everything in between - then, IMO, you're an asshole.
That is not saying, "Anyone who doesn't agree with my beliefs is an asshole."
And now I'd like to not type the word "asshole" for about 48 hours.
